As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, J&K LSA Department of Telecom, Jammu is promoting the setting up of Public Wi-Fi Networks by Public Data Office Aggregators (PDOAs) to provide public Wi-Fi service through Public Data Offices (PDOs) spread across length and breadth of Jammu & Kashmir UT and Ladakh UT.
The move is expected to accelerate proliferation of Broadband Internet services through Public Wi-Fi network and in turn, will help in enhancement of income, employment and empowerment of people.
PDO is the Data Avtaar of erstwhile PCO. This Public Wi-Fi Access Network Interface system is known as PM-WANI (Prime Minister- Wireless Access Network Interface). Proliferation of Broadband Services through public Wi-Fi is a step towards digital India and consequential benefit thereon.

To take forward this great initiative in the rural areas of Jammu & Kashmir, today the first PM-WANI Access Point was launched in collaboration with CSC Wifi Choupal in J&K at Gram Panchayat Haripur, Block Satwari, District Jammu. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Kailash Chandra Panday (Sr DDG) in presence of officers of Department of Telecommunication Shri Radheshyam Parmar (DDG), Shri Vineet Verma (Director), Shri Vivek Krishna Verma (Assistant Director) and CSC officials Mr. Ashwani Kumar, Mr Aman Verma and Mr. Mohit Sharma. Sarpanch Balbir Kumar, VLE Rahul Kumar and local citizens were also present during the event.
It is envisaged that CSC e-Governance Services India Limited will engage Village Level Entrepreneur (VLEs) as PDOs (Public Data Office) to sell internet broadband over Wi-Fi in rural areas of J&K. It will now be very easy and affordable for people in Rural areas to purchase coupons of small amounts from PDOs and use high speed internet as per their need in and around the Access points established by the PDO.
